Jones W – 1933
BB Gazette Vol.42 No.6 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Corporal Walter Alphaeus Jones, aged 17, of the 1st Turk’s Island Company, British West Indies, for saving the life of a small Boy from drowning in the sea at Grand Turk on the 25th of July, 1933.
A little American Boy of 7 years of age who was on holiday fell from the end of the Government Pier at Grand Turk into the sea. It was night time and quite dark, and there were no boats in the vicinity. The child was unable to swim and had already gone under twice, when Jones, who holds the B.B. Swimming Badge, dived into the sea fully dressed, although he knew that the spot was one frequented by sharks. In spite of the darkness he succeeded in reaching the drowning Boy and, unassisted, brought him safely back to the Pier.
