BB Gazette Vol.68 No.5 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private Michael Marshall of the 32^nd Edinburgh Company.

In the early hours of a Sunday morning in February a neighbour noticed smoke coming from a cottage in which an elderly lady lived alone. She roused Mr. Clark and Michael who live next door and they scrambled out of bed. Smoke was pouring out of the windows. The doors were locked and they could see furniture smouldering. Michael’s father helped him climb through a window while he went to summon the Fire Brigade. The rooms were full of smoke and Michael could hardly breathe. He could not see the old lady but could hear her crying. Michael tried three times to reach her and had to go back to the hall for air. Eventually he succeeded in crawling in and was able to grasp the old lady’s hand, but was unable to drag her out. Fortunately the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene in the nick of time and the old lady, whose clothes were burning, was rescued and conveyed to hospital.
