Hall W – 1923

The Life Brigade Chronicle 1923 – The Distinguished Service Diploma and Cross for Courage have been awarded to William Hall, of the Barnsley Co., who jumped into a reservoir belonging to the Barnsley Main Colliery Co., and rescued a boy aged 5, who had fallen in. The water was over 9 feet deep; the reservoir has concrete vertical walls which afforded no hand-hold, and the surface of the water was 2 feet from the top of the wall.

The Life Brigade Chronicle, December 1923 – The Brigade Award of the Diploma of Honour and Cross for Bravery to Private Hall, of the 1st Cliffe Bridge Company, was made the occasion of a rally in behalf of the N.S.P.C.C, which was held by the Leeds Battalion on October 20th Last. The Lord Mayor of Leeds presided, and he was accompanied by the Lady Mayoress. The Lord Mayor spoke admirably to the boys, and an eloquent address was delivered by Mr. Elliot, the Assistant Director of the Society. The Lord Mayor presented the Brigade awards, and a very impressive event produced a marked effect upon the assembly of nearly a thousand persons. After the rally the Battalion marched past and the Salute was taken by Major Joseph Henry, the Battalion C.O., who was accompanied by Mr Elliot and a number of members of the Committee of the N.S.P.C.C. and some officers of the G.L.B.
