Wren C – 1923

The Life Brigade Chronicle, December 1923 – The issue of this Cross is carefully guarded by the Executive Committee. It is therefore with great pleasure that they have been able to sanction its award to Christopher Wren, a member of the 8th Southampton Company.

On July 12th a boy of 11 years of age, named George Henry Morgan, was bathing at the Fisherman’s Walk, Woolston, when he got out of his depth by suddenly stepping into a hole. Being unable to swim sufficiently to regain the shore, he was in considerable danger, and on coming to the surface shouted for help. Wren heard the call, and was able to reach him when he rose for the second time. Morgan grippen Wren on the shoulder, pulling him under the water, but Morgan became unconscious and Wren was thus able to save him which he did by swimming on his back a distance of 150 yards, supporting the unconscious boy on his stomach.

On reaching the shore, Wren assisted a gentleman named Mr. Spanton with artificial respiration, and end eventually they were successful in restarting animation.

It is interesting to note that Christopher Wren is a direct descendant of the famous architect.
