Somerset Battalion

The Somerset Battalion was formed in 1969 following the merger of the Wessex and Mid-Somerset Battalions.

The first parade of the newly-formed Battalion was held on 1st February 1970 in Bridgwater, with an annual parade held every year across the county.

The new Battalion Colours were dedicated at a service in Dorchester on 24th September 1972. The old Wessex Battalion Colours laid up at St Peter’s, Dorchester, and the Mid Somerset Colours were laid up at Bridgwater Baptist Church.

During the Centenary year, the Somerset Battalion was granted permission to parade to Wells Cathedral. The event was attended by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, who sent a glowing letter of praise for the parade.
