Sutherland A – 1996

BB Gazette Vol.105 No.2The Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Alexander Sutherland, 19, of 12th Dundee Company.

Alexander heard cries for help from a man trapped in an upstairs flat which was burning fiercely. At considerable risk to himself, Alexander climbed stairs despite heat and smoke and found the occupant semi-conscious, suffering from smoke inhalation. Alexander dragged him out to safety and the man recovered after hospital treatment.

Alexander received his award at a ceremony at the High Kirk attended by the Lord Provost, Meryn Rolfe, and parents and friends. The Lord Provost said ‘This act of extreme heroism must make his parents extremely proud and the City is very proud of having a young man who was prepared to put his own safety at risk to save someone else’.
