Leonard Henry West, who had been playing in a field near the Electric Railway Line at Norbiton, had climbed through a wire fence and got on to the live electric rail. Leslie Thorn heard a shout for help and ran to the railway line. Disregarding the shouts of onlookers as to the danger, he approached the child, whose clothes were smoking, and, standing on the wooden sleeper, succeeded in pulling the little Boy off the live rail, sustaining a shock himself in doing so. The child unfortunately died from shock and burns. Leslie Thorn was complimented by the Coroner at the subsequent inquest for the great courage he had shown in risking his own life in attempting to save another’s.
