Bishop J – 1909
BB Gazette Vol.18 No.8 – The Brigade Executive has awarded the Cross for Heroism to Private James Bishop, aged 14, 1st Cromer Company, for saving a Girl from drowning in the River Yare at Gorleston, Yarmouth, on 31st October, 1909. Private Bishop has also been awarded the Certificate of the Royal Humane Society for this act.
Unattributed newspaper report – BOY’S HEROISM REWARDED. For saving a little girl from drowning at Great Yarmouth last October, James L Bishop, aged 14, son of ex-Chief Officer George Bishop, R.N., of the Cromer Coastguards, has been presented with the vellum certificate of the Royal Humane Society and the Hero’s Cross of the Boys’ Brigade, in the Cromer Company of which he is a private. James dived into sixteen feet of water to rescue the girl, who had fallen into the river. The lad is going into the Mercantile marine.
Norfolk News 23rd April 1910 records the presentation to James of his Cross for Heroism and Royal Humane Society certificate, in the Parish Hall, Cromer, by Mrs H Bond Cabbell, at what appears to be a gathering especially for the presentation, with the attendance of local VIPs, and many fine words about James and The Boys’ Brigade.
