Bishop J – 1922

BB Gazette Vol.31 No.4 – The Executive have awarded the Cross for Heroism to Corporal Robert M’Geoch, age 16, and Lance-Corporal John Bishop, age 16, both of the 164th Glasgow Company, for heroism in saving a little girl from drowning in Loch Earn, and rescuing others. The girls were playing about a boat on the edge of the loch and pushed it out into deeper water. They all clambered aboard, except one, who hung on to the stern. The Boys playing cricket not far off heard screams, and rushing to the shore saw the oarless boat drifting out into mid loch. Lance-Corporal Bishop, without removing any of his clothing, dived in and began swimming towards the boat, while Corporal M’Geoch ran round the loch to a small jetty and diving off also swam towards the boat. M’Geoch was the first to reach it, and climbing in he soon assisted the girl, whose strength was failing, into safety. In the meantime, one of the Lieutenants had procured another boat, and rowing out he picked up Bishop, who was almost exhausted, and taking the other boat in tow, brought the whole party safely to the bank.

Both Boys had to swim about seventy-five yards, fully clothed.
