BB Gazette Vol.43 No.4 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private Albert Goode, aged 15, of the 1^st Northampton Company, for saving a Boy from drowning in the Grand  Union Canal on the 8th of August.

Goode’s action was particularly praiseworthy by reason of the fact that he is partially crippled, and, although he had learned to swim a little, he had no knowledge of life-saving. Some Boys camping near the Canal were washing on the bank, when one of them fell in, and being unable to swim was floating helplessly out into deep water. Goode, hearing cries for help, plunged in and swam out 30 feet to the drowning Boy, who had gone down for the second time. Having succeeded unaided in bringing the Boy to safety, Goode then collapsed, completely exhausted by the effort which nearly cost him his life.
