Harris G – 1958

BB Gazette Vol.67 No.1 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private George Harris, age 15, of the 1st Cookstown Company. A young woman of 24 years of age was having her photograph taken on a rock in the sea on the Atlantic coastline between Portrush and Portstewart on 23rd July, 1958, when heavy seas washed her off. The woman could not swim and was being swept out to sea by the strong tide. Harris was nearby, and without hesitation he dived in and swam some distance to reach the woman, who was in a semi-conscious condition. With great difficulty Harris succeeded in bringing her to the shore without assistance.
