MacDougall N – 1934

BB Gazette Vol.43 No.1 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private Neil MacDougall, aged 15, of the 1st Oban Company, for saving a Boy from drowning in the Railway Reservoir, near Oban, on the 25th May. One of a crowd of small Boys playing beside the reservoir fell in and, as he was unable to swim, quickly sank. MacDougall, who had only just learned to swim, hearing cries, ran to the reservoir and, although it was known to be deep water and the walls were perpendicular and without any foothold, he plunged in regardless of the evident difficulty of getting out. He succeeded in bringing the drowning Boy to the surface and with a struggle reached the side. Assistance was ultimately forthcoming and both Boys were safely brought out.
