Stafford A – 1907

1907– At Swan Island, near Queenscliffe, where the Boys’ Naval Brigade are in camp, J Cedzich,…. Went out bathing yesterday with some other members of the brigade. Cedzich, who was unable to swim, got out of his depth, and a boy named Stafford went, at much risk to himself, to his assistance. With the help of an Officer he got Cedzich ashore, but it was found impossible to restore animation. (1) ……The conduct of his saviour, favourably commented upon at the time, was brought under the notice of The Boys’ Brigade Council of Great Britain. That body forwarded to Melbourne a medal for heroism. This was handed to plucky Stafford on Tuesday night at the Collins-street Baptist Church on the occasions of the 36th anniversary of the Sunday School Union of Victoria. (2)

The Boys’ Naval Brigade Company was attached to the Williamstown Presbyterian Church Melbourne, Australia. (3)

This award is recorded in ‘The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism and Diploma for Gallant Conduct register’, however, it was never recorded in The Boys’ Brigade Gazette.
